| Platanias, home of the "Hotel Des
Roses", is a small fishing port serving the village of Promiri.
Platanias is situated on the southeast side of Pelion, opposite
the Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and the Northern
part of the island of Evia. |
All of Platanias and most of the area
in the southeast of Pelion used to be the ancient city Sipias, to
whom the municipality of Sipiada, where Platanias belongs, owes
its name. Writing by Hirodotus suggested that this place was dedicated
to Niriides, the goddesses of the sea, as well as to the goddess
Thetis, who was abducted by King Pileas in one of the sea caves,
which is today found on the spot of Bournias near to Platanias.
The whole area here is filled with scattered ruins, such as the
ancient temples of Artemis. You can also see monuments of the Byzantine
and the post-Byzantine period, such as churches and monasteries,
with rare icons and frescos from this period, which are of immense
religious and historic importance. |

 |
The monastery of Agios Spyridon
is the only one in the all of Greece dedicated to this Saint
and has impressive icons and frescos.
It was an important monastery and supported from the very
beginning, the revolution against the Ottoman occupation.
In Platanias during the summer two festivals take place.
On the 1st of July is the celebration of the small chapel
of Agii Anargiri and from the 20th to 25th of August is
the festival of The friends of Platanias, which
is held in honor of the visitors to Platanias. |
|

port you will find a number of fishing boats, yachts and sailing
